Scope and Focus

Journal of Studies in Science and Engineering (JoSSE) is a semi-annual, double-blind, peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by EngiScience Publisher. The journal’s electronic ISSN is 2789-634X.

JoSSE publishes original research articles and critical review articles in applied science, engineering, and technology, with emphasis on work that demonstrates methodological rigor, practical relevance, and clear scientific or engineering contribution. The journal particularly welcomes submissions in the following areas:

  • built environment and civil systems
  • materials and manufacturing
  • environmental and energy systems
  • computing and intelligent technologies
  • interdisciplinary engineering applications

All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), providing immediate and free access to full-text content worldwide. JoSSE follows the IEEE citation and referencing style and is committed to maintaining strong standards of scholarly publishing.

Journal Sections

Original Research Articles

This section publishes full-length original studies that present a clear scientific or engineering contribution. Submitted manuscripts should report well-designed research, present methods and results clearly, and ensure that the conclusions are supported by the evidence provided.

Recommended length

  • Original research articles: 4,500–10,000 words excluding references
  • Abstract: up to 200 words

Review Articles

This section publishes critical and well-structured reviews of established or emerging topics within the journal’s scope. Review articles should go beyond summary and provide evaluation, synthesis, identification of gaps, and discussion of future research directions.

Recommended length

  • Review articles: 5,500–15,000 words excluding references
  • Abstract: up to 200 words

Scope and Suitability

Before submission, authors should ensure that their manuscript falls within the journal’s scope. JoSSE publishes work in applied science, engineering, and technology, with emphasis on:

  • methodological rigor
  • practical relevance
  • technical quality
  • clear scientific or engineering contribution

Manuscripts that are outside the journal’s scope or do not meet minimum scholarly standards may be declined without external review.

Submission Requirements

Authors should prepare manuscripts carefully before submission. Manuscripts must:

  • be written in clear academic English
  • be original and not under consideration elsewhere
  • follow the journal’s formatting and referencing requirements
  • be anonymized for double-blind peer review where applicable
  • include all required declarations and supporting statements

The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all submission materials are complete and accurate at the time of submission.

Authorship Requirements

All listed authors must have made a meaningful scholarly contribution to the work and must approve the submitted and final versions of the manuscript. Authorship should be limited to those who have substantially contributed to the conception, design, execution, analysis, or interpretation of the study.

The corresponding author is responsible for confirming that:

  • all eligible contributors are listed as authors
  • no inappropriate authors are included
  • all authors have approved the manuscript
  • all authors agree to the submission and publication process

Changes in authorship after submission must be justified and approved by the editorial office.

Ethical Requirements

Authors must ensure that their work complies with accepted standards of research integrity and publication ethics. Submitted manuscripts must be original, accurately reported, and free from plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, and inappropriate image or data manipulation.

Authors must also ensure that:

  • the manuscript has not been published elsewhere in the same form
  • the manuscript is not under review by another journal
  • all sources are properly cited
  • permissions have been obtained for any copyrighted content where required

Conflict of Interest Disclosure

All authors must disclose any financial, institutional, professional, or personal relationships that could influence, or appear to influence, the work reported in the manuscript.

If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should include the statement:

The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Funding Disclosure

Authors must disclose all sources of financial support related to the research and publication of the manuscript.

If there was no external funding, authors should include the statement:

This research received no external funding.

AI Use Disclosure

If generative artificial intelligence or AI-assisted tools were used during manuscript preparation, authors must disclose this clearly in the manuscript. Acceptable uses may include language improvement, formatting assistance, or limited drafting support, but authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and appropriateness of all submitted content.

AI tools must not be listed as authors.

A disclosure statement should be included where relevant, for example:

The authors used AI-assisted tools for language editing and/or formatting support. All content was reviewed and verified by the authors, who take full responsibility for the final manuscript.

Originality and Plagiarism Screening

JoSSE screens submitted manuscripts for originality using plagiarism-detection software such as Turnitin. Similarity reports are assessed by the editorial team as part of the initial screening process. Editorial decisions are not based on a numerical threshold alone; the nature, extent, and source of overlap are evaluated in context.

Manuscripts containing plagiarism, substantial unattributed overlap, redundant publication, or other forms of unethical reuse may be rejected or returned for clarification. This improves the older wording that relied only on a fixed percentage threshold.

Data Availability Statement

Authors are required to include a data availability statement in the manuscript where relevant. This statement should indicate whether the data supporting the findings are publicly available, available upon reasonable request, restricted, or not applicable.

Examples:

  • The data presented in this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.
  • No new data were created or analyzed in this study.
  • The data are publicly available at [repository/source].

Human and Animal Ethics

Where relevant, manuscripts reporting research involving human participants, human data, animals, or biological materials must include an appropriate ethics statement.

Authors should state:

  • the name of the approving ethics committee or institutional review board
  • approval number where applicable
  • whether informed consent was obtained where relevant

Submissions lacking necessary ethical approval or participant protections may be rejected.

Reference Style

JoSSE follows the IEEE citation and referencing style. Authors are responsible for ensuring that all references are accurate, complete, consistently formatted, and cited appropriately in the text.

Submission and Peer Review Process

JoSSE uses a double-blind peer review process.

Initial editorial screening

All submissions are first reviewed by the editorial team to assess:

  • relevance to the journal’s scope
  • overall scholarly suitability
  • compliance with submission requirements
  • ethical and editorial completeness

External review

Manuscripts that pass initial screening are sent to at least two independent reviewers with relevant expertise.

Editorial decision

Based on reviewer reports and editorial assessment, the manuscript may be:

  • accepted
  • accepted with minor revisions
  • invited for major revisions
  • rejected

Revisions

Authors invited to revise their manuscript should submit:

  • a revised manuscript
  • a clear response to reviewer comments
  • any updated declarations or statements, if needed

The editorial office may send revised manuscripts for further review where appropriate.

Corrections, Retractions, and Post-Publication Updates

JoSSE is committed to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the scholarly record. Where necessary, the journal may issue:

  • corrections
  • retractions
  • expressions of concern

These actions are taken in accordance with the journal’s editorial policies and publication ethics procedures. Authors are expected to cooperate fully if concerns arise after publication.

Journal Publishing Agreement

For accepted manuscripts, the corresponding author must complete the Journal Publishing Agreement. on behalf of all co-authors before publication. The agreement confirms originality, author approval, and the rights necessary for publication and distribution. The current page text should be clarified so that this step is described consistently as occurring after acceptance, not during the initial submission stage.

Language Quality

Authors should ensure that manuscripts are written in clear, grammatically correct academic English. Manuscripts with language problems that significantly affect clarity may be returned for revision before peer review or before acceptance.
