Using Hemp for Walls as a Sustainable Building Material

Abstract

As an ancient plant from thousands of years ago, Hemp has been used as the most prominent sustainable material in buildings and other fields. Hemp has great potential to be used as a building material and can be grown in Cyprus weather with less cost than other imported building materials. Hemp’s initial cost is mostly cheaper than the other insulation materials; in the long term can save almost 50% of the total energy cost. It is being used as a load-bearing construction material, the best insulator. This study proposed a detached house where Hemp can be used for walls as structure (load-bearing) and floors and roofs as plastering layers.

Author Biographies

Sardar S. Shareef, Architectural Engineering Department,. Faculty of Engineering, Tishk International University-Sulaimani, Sulaimani, 46001, Iraq

Sardar is a Ph.D. holder completed in the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture at the Eastern Mediterranean University in North Cyprus. He completed his BSc. In architecture engineering in 2005 at the University of Sulaimani/Iraq. He has studied MSc. in interior architecture at the Eastern Mediterranean University and is now a lecturer at Tishk International University-Sulaimani. Sardar has several publications focused on innovative methods and pedagogies applied in architectural education and teaching/learning technical courses, designing interior spaces for autistic children, and semiotics in architecture.

 

Hozan Latif Rauf, Decoration Engineering-Interior Design Department, Kurdistan Technical Institute, Sulaimani, 44001, Iraq

Hozan is a Ph.D. holder in architecture at the Eastern Mediterranean University in North of Cyprus. She also obtained her MSc. in Interior architecture at the same university. Now she is an instructor at Tishk International University-Sulaimani and previously was teaching several courses at Cihan University-Sulaimaniya. Her main research interest is architectural education, pedagogical methods, and interior design.
