Abstract

The challenge of mitigating soil swelling and shrinkage has driven geotechnical engineers and researchers to seek effective, sustainable, and cost-efficient stabilization methods. One promising approach is using industrial by-products, such as blast furnace slag (BFS), as stabilizing agents. This study investigates the effect of BFS on soil's shrink/swell properties by incorporating it in three different percentages (5%, 10%, and 15%). Soil characteristics, including Atterberg limits, linear shrinkage, compaction parameters (maximum dry density and optimum moisture content), and consolidation parameters (compression index (Cc), swelling index (Cs), recompression index (Cr), and swelling strain (ε)), were evaluated. The results indicate that BFS significantly improved soil properties. Linear shrinkage was reduced by approximately 50%, while the compression index, swelling index, recompression index, and swelling strain improved by 96.1%, 97.1%, 95.6%, and 50.7%, respectively. These findings suggest that BFS is an effective stabilizing agent for mitigating shrink/swell behavior in soils, making it a viable option for geotechnical applications.
